At DIG, you get to discover only the most exciting archaeological artefacts from 2000 years of history hidden under the streets of York. Our four excavation pits are filled with Roman, Viking, Medieval and Victorian finds, so you can grab a trowel and dig up the clues that show how people lived in these times.

Visitors then go on to examine real archaeological finds and work out what they were used for. Look out for the 1000-year-old skulls and the Viking-Age Poo!

Looking Back at Hungate

What the archaeologist discovered during their investigation was a rich and changing story, reflecting how people adapted the use of this low lying parcel of land that sits within an elbow of the River Foss.

Discover the story of Skeleton 58, who died in Roman Hungate and was selected for further osteological analysis. Get a feel for Roman burial practices, cemeteries, and afterlife. See intricate and amazing Roman jewellery that had been placed in graves over 1,500 years ago.

Find out how timbers from an Anglo-Saxon ship were remade into the cellar of a Viking-age house.

Meet Benjamin Seebohrn Rowntree and many more people who lived and worked in Victorian York. Learn about their different occupations, their personal lifestyles and the different people who made up the Hungate community.
