Hollycombe
Steam in the Country, situated on the Hampshire and Sussex border, is a museum
home to one of Britain’s largest collection of working steam. Attractions
include the largest Edwardian steam-driven fairground in
Britain, a Quarry and Garden Railway, a farm with a collection of working barn
machinery, road engines and steam rollers and Listed Gardens.

Dating
back to the 1870’s, the fairground at Hollycombe has some of the oldest and
most thrilling fairground rides of their day, including
the world’s oldest mechanically operated fairground attraction, Mr. Field’s
Steam Circus. The
collection also includes the beautiful Golden Gallopers with their wonderful
Gaviolli Fairground Organ, the steam-powered Chair-o-planes and a magnificent
Big Wheel. There are also a number of children’s rides and popular sideshows of
their day.

There are two steam railways at Hollycombe. The
Quarry Railway is a Narrow-Gauge line which runs for 1.5 miles through pretty
woodland and fields. The journey starts at the station opposite the visitor
centre and offers spectacular views across the South Downs. The second railway
is a Garden Railway which runs in a continuous loop of about one third of a
mile.

Hollycombe also has a Steam Farm which houses a wide
collection of barn machinery, a cider press and Blacksmith’s Forge and nestled
in amongst the landscape a Beam Engine, the oldest example of working steam on
site. There are various road engines and steam rollers on the grounds which
include an Aveling & Porter 10-ton roller built in 1921.

Hollycombe
offers extensive grounds with stunning views across the South Downs National
Park and excellent visitor facilities. There is a large reception building, education
room, a café serving hot and cold food, a gift shop and offices, as well as, a
number of ancillary buildings.
