Kirklees Light Railway

Date:April 4, 2018 10:37 am

Climb aboard Yorkshire’s Great Little Steam Trains for a scenic, three
and-a-half mile journey along our 15” narrow-gauge railway.  Travel through the beautiful foothills
of the South Pennines to our Shelley terminus where you can enjoy the panoramic
views of the surrounding area.  The journey from Clayton West to Shelley (via Cuckoo’s Nest and
Skelmanthorpe) offers fine views of the Grade II listed Emley Transmitting
Station and passes through the ancient woodland of Blacker Wood which is
mentioned in the Domesday Book.
The trip
also includes passage through the Shelley Woodhouse Tunnel which – at 467m long
– is the longest tunnel on any 15” narrow gauge line in Britain!

Start your journey at Clayton West Station where there is a large free
car park, a new playground for the children and an extensive gift and model railway
shop.  The Buffer Stop Cafe is also
located at Clayton West Station and is ideal for grabbing a quick snack or
something more substantial before you begin your journey.  All dietary requirements can be catered for
with advance notice and special dining packages for groups are available.

Board the train at Clayton West and travel through our two intermediate
stations of Cuckoo’s Nest and Skelmanthorpe before reaching the end destination
of Shelley Station.  At Shelley, you will
find a tea room serving light refreshments (during standard operating days) and
a play area for the children.  On a
summer’s day, enjoy the large picnic area and stunning views of the surrounding
area.

A return journey on the train can be completed in 70 minutes, however
you may choose to lengthen your time with us by adding in different aspects to
your visit.  Should members of your group
wish to tour the Engine Sheds and speak with our drivers and engineers, we
would be happy to arrange this for you.

We hold many special events throughout the year – details can be
found on our website:
www.kirkleeslightrailway.com and we
welcome group bookings!

We are in close proximity to a number of other local attractions such as
the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the National Coal Mining Museum, Standedge
Tunnel, Holmfirth attractions  and the
Peak District, should you wish to continue your day out.
