A living testament to the mining communities of the world famous Rhondda Valleys, Rhondda Heritage Park offers a fascinating insight into the rich culture and character of the South Wales valleys in a unique entertaining and educational environment for all ages.
- Our Underground Experience Tours are fully guided by ex-miner guides ~ and take approximately 40minutes.
Don your safety helmet in the lamp room, ride ‘the cage’ to ‘pit bottom’ where you will ‘live the experience’ of life as a miner and hear from your guide about the hazards and tasks miners endured as part of their daily work
- Your first stop on the guided tour is the Trefor Winding House, named after WT Lewis’ eldest son it houses the magnificent original steam engine built in 1890
- Next is a visit to the Lamp Room. Here you will collect your safety helmet and your guide will explain about the importance of the lamp safety check. You will also find out about the dangerous gases associated with working underground
- Dressed in your safety hat, you will now descend in the ‘cage’ to pit bottom to experience life as a working miner
- On the surface visit the The Visitor Centre – where admission is free ~ here you will find an indoor reconstruction of a period village street displaying the domestic and commercial life of the Valleys
- On the first floor you will find ~ ‘Level One’ – our Contemporary Art Gallery & Café ~ with stunning views of the lower Rhondda Valleys ~ its a great place to relax over coffee, meet friends for lunch and enjoy the regularly changing programme of exhibitions, exclusive artworks, ceramics and jewellery
