The Monkey Sanctuary is the flagship project of the charity Wild Futures.  The Sanctuary, which recently became the first in Europe to receive accreditation from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) has been a long-established tourist attraction since 1964.  It is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of monkeys; many rescued from the pet trade.

On visiting The Monkey Sanctuary, there’s a lot to do for the whole family; you can take a tour of the monkey enclosures and learn about these fascinating animals from the team of expert keepers.  Or take a gentle stroll around the beautiful woodland gardens, a haven for native wildlife.  It is here during the spring you may spot the rare Pearl bordered Fritillary butterfly.

Visitors can pass the time, admiring the views and tasting the delicious vegetarian cuisine at the award winning Treetop Café.  Children may be enticed by the play area, where they can swing like monkeys or take part in arts and crafts in the purpose built activity room.  There is also a bat zone on site, which has a camera linked up to film the colony of the lesser horseshoe bats which have taken up resident under the gothic Murrayton House.

The Monkey Sanctuary is open April – October, Sundays to Thursdays.  During the school holidays the Sanctuary does open on extra days so it is always best to check the website www.monkeysanctuary.org
