Built in 1862 following the threat of a French invasion, the Old Battery has a fascinating military history which is brought to life in a child-friendly way using cartoon displays by Geoff Campion, leading comic book artist of the 1950s. Children can enjoy using the trails and free discovery packs that will help them explore the tunnels and learn about the Battery’s history and connections to the Second World War.

The signal station tea room has excellent sea views and serves homemade cakes, sandwiches, soups and other light refreshments. The tea-room is also open most winter weekends when the rest of the site is closed.

The Needles New Battery contains an exhibition about the secret rocket tests carried out there in the 1950s and 60s as part of Britain’s race for space and, there is also a small refreshment kiosk.

Please note, there is no vehicle access to the Needles Old and New Battery. The nearest parking is at the Needles Park at Alum Bay (not NT) and then it’s approx a ¾ mile walk along a well surfaced path. Alternatively there is a bus (min fare £5 return from Alum Bay, special reduced fare for NT members). Please call number above to arrange disabled access.
